Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones

While not as highly praised as its predecessors, Attack of the Clones is still a solid entry in the Star Wars saga. Hayden Christensen’s portrayal of Anakin Skywalker has grown on fans, and the film’s action sequences hold up well. However, some viewers may find the romance between Anakin and Padmé Amidala (Natalie Portman) to be a bit forced.

One of the most memorable moments comes when Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) and Anakin Skywalker engage in a lightsaber duel on the planet Geonosis. The choreography was reportedly inspired by the martial arts films of the time, adding to the action’s visceral feel. This scene showcases the chemistry between the two leads.

Fans have spotted a number of subtle references throughout the film, including a cameo by Ponda Baba (Alan Ruscoe), who was also in The Empire Strikes Back. Additionally, the infamous ‘ midi-chlorians’ concept is introduced, which has been largely debunked as a plot device to explain Anakin’s abilities. Despite this, it remains an interesting footnote in the Star Wars narrative.

Interestingly, Hayden Christensen was not the first choice for Anakin Skywalker; Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger were reportedly considered before the role went to Christensen. Additionally, the film’s visual effects were groundbreaking at the time, with the Clone Army being a particular highlight.

The film’s depiction of the Clone Wars and the introduction of the Republic’s Grand Army mark a significant shift in the series’ tone, moving away from the more lighthearted episodes. While some fans appreciate the blossoming relationship between Anakin and Padmé, others find it to be a narrative misstep. The romantic subplot was reportedly not part of George Lucas’ original plan for the character, adding to its perceived incongruity within the larger story.
