Frequently Asked Questions
How many Harry Potter movies are there?
Eight. The final book, Deathly Hallows, was split into two films, so seven books became eight movies.
What order should I watch Harry Potter in?
Straight through in release order, which is also chronological order. Each film picks up roughly where the last ended.
Should I watch Fantastic Beasts before or after?
After. They are prequels, but they assume you already recognise names like Dumbledore and Grindelwald from the main series.
Are the films different from the books?
Yes, substantially in places. Later films in particular compress or drop subplots, though the central story is faithful.
Is Philosopher’s Stone the same film as Sorcerer’s Stone?
Yes. The first film was released as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in the United States and as Philosopher’s Stone elsewhere.
